Furniture designers creating their own brand

Stefano Giovannoni with his Rabbit chair from the new Qeeboo collectionStefanno Giovannoni and his golden rabbit chairs created under his new brand Qeeboo.

I just read this very interesting article in Dezeen this morning and thought it was worth sharing for all other designers out there doing it alone. And for anyone else interested in creative business in general...

When I started anaca studio, I sure didn't think it was going to be a walk in the park. I have questioned many decisions I have made and it's often been a matter of trials and errors to get to a solution that worked for me. Things change so fast these days that adjustments have to be made continually.

One of the hardest thing to get my head around was how to structure the business. Do I just want to design? Do I want to everything? Is there somewhere in between?
So far I'm handling the lot. Designing, getting the designs to the manufacturers, going round picking up parts, doing some assemblies, quality control, distribution, orders, accounting, sales, clients meeting, PR, marketing, social media and so on...
I'm not writing this to complain here. In a sadistic way, I enjoy doing all this - or at least the control freak part of me does! I did make the decision to leave the manufacturing to others... I do know that I couldn't do it all. My Jamfactory days as a designer-maker in Adelaide at least taught me that...

I won't say that if there was an opportunity to design for a larger company, I wouldn't do it. Of course I would! But I can see why designers cannot rely on this alone to make a living... and therefore end up creating their own brands. For some big names, it might not be as challenging. Although Tom Dixon acknowledges the complexity of getting the products to the market .
Lee Broom though, is an example of someone who has done it own his own, as a start up really and succeeded in creating and growing his own brand. I'm a huge fan not just of his products but also of what he's achieved.

Anyway... check out Dezeen's article here. It's a good read.

London designer Lee Broom also designs, manufactures and sells products under his own name. His exhibition for Milan design week 2016 was held in a travelling van
Hi Lee... you're awesome! That truck... what a concept!

Den Fair 2015 - Melbourne. A little update on the show...

Let's just say that it was a very busy 3 days and a rewarding show for anaca studio.
The exhibition was such a great opportunity to display our little goodies for you all to touch, feel and try. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to meet a lot of new and exciting people.

The Jules console was very popular and many of you expressed that your favourite elements were its originality and clean lines. The Elliot coat stand is still charming people and the Coco ottomans are adding some quirk and fun into the collection.

So thank you to all of you who made it there and stopped by...  and if you've missed us, I have included below a few snapshots from our insta feed!

Feel free to email: info@anacastudio.com.au if you have any queries at all.

Merci et à bientôt.

Yes, I have been pretty slack with this blog... There has been a lot going this year and unfortunately something had to give. Sorry blog. I'll definitely try and keep things and news going here though! And no, it is not a new year's resolution. :)
But anyway... It's time for relaxation, bubbles, good food, friends, family, happiness & sunshine!

Monthly Musings...

Early sketches for the Mr Cross Table range

My poor blog has been lacking the love of late, my attention & time were caught in other places and priorities had to shift for a while. Hope to be able to get back into it in a more regular fashion.
As I managed to get some time catching up with other blogs today I stumbled onto Meet me at Mikes latest post "Taking Stock" and really liked the idea of it. I enjoyed the way it made me wonder about things I would possibly just ignore and found it an inspiring exercise. So I thought I'd give it a go myself and will also try to keep it as a monthly subject.
Thanks for the inspiration Pip.

Phileas floor cushions - the twins!

Nice and plump, they are new and ready to go travel to their new owner... Not bad for cushions inspired by the old suitcase... These two are going in a kids playroom, pretty special!

Bon Voyage!

If you love it, take care of it...

Si tu l'aimes, prends en soin...

Beautiful furniture needs to be taken care of. The more you care the longer it'll last. It's like anything else. Think of the food people put into their body, see how it affects them, in a good way or in a bad way. Furniture is not too dissimilar. But it's actually really easy and it requires very little work, one just have to do the right thing. So here's my 2 cents:

Timber items:

- For any lacquered finishes: the coating protects the timber and shouldn't require any cleaning except dusting. Use a warm damp soft cloth (if soap is required, choose a mild furniture soap) and wipe along the grain to remove any dried spills, then dry off straight away with a different soft cloth again going along the grain.
- For oil finishes: use a high quality furniture oil every now and then to restore the original finish. Don't forget your soft cloth and move along the grain.
- Although there are usually no problems using general timber cleaning products, they may change the shine and appearance of the original finish. Some of them contains waxes that will enhance the shine, which is not always the level of gloss intended on the original furniture. These products should not be used more than a few times a year depending on usage of the furniture.
- If placing flower pots or vases on a table, ensure felt is placed at the bottom to avoid any surface scratches on your furniture or water marks. Also, some ceramics are porous and if filled with water they may cause dampness under their bases which in turn could cause damages to the lacquer or the timber.
- Whatever you do, do not place hot items directly on the surface of a table and do not leave any spills (hot or cold) to sit on timber surfaces. Hot items will create these shadow marks which are hard if not impossible to get rid of without having to have to surface of your furniture polished.
- Avoid direct sunlight. Depending on the finish of the furniture and the timber used, if exposed to direct sunlight, the timber may darken or lighten. The heat created could also damage veneers or cause solid timber to dry out and crack or distort (this could also happen if left to close to a heater). There again, look at what happens to us when we stay too long in the sun... why should it be different for a natural material such as timber.

Metal

- Wipe regularly with a soft cloth to remove dust or damp soft cloth to remove dirt. Avoid using any cleaning agents that may contain harsh chemicals.

Upholstery

- For fabrics, regularly vacuum to remove dust and dirt.
- For leather, wipe over with a clean damp cloth to remove dirt particles - except for pure aniline leathers which have no protective coatings and will absorb moisture. This said I have saved my leather armchair that has an aniline leather from a massive red wine spill by immediately wiping it off with a wet cloth! I was taking a big risk, which admittedly paid off but I just wouldn't advise it generally. Aniline leathers also have a tendency to fade in the sun - so keep this in mind when placing your furniture or choosing your leather.
- All fabrics and leathers are different so always check the composition or type of leather and if you can, refer directly to the fabric or leather manufacturer for their advised cleaning methods.

So that's it... do all this and the furniture you love will last you a lifetime. At the same time don't be precious about using beautiful things, where's the joy otherwise?! In my opinion, a scratch or a bump is only adding a little bit of character and individuality to your furniture. It creates a history, a memory. That's why people love buying vintage items...

A la prochaine!

Zoe - Sophisticated vs fun?

anaca studio's Zoe table comes standard with a black or white base (in previous post here) but is also available in other Dulux powdercoat finishes. So it's versatile depending if you need a more sophisticated look or something a little more colourful (see it here too)... Regardless, it keeps its beautiful lines and stays the best table you will have at home...

Above images are "impressions" only - make sure you check actual samples prior to ordering.

Phileas Pouf & Zoe Table - Ready to go

These little guys are ready to go to their lucky owner this week. Well pink Phileas stays in the studio, but they made such a good pair, I just had to take that shot! The little poufs are perfect for kids room or to throw around the lounge when the extra guests come along... Do you have yours yet? Don't forget the Zoe table to go with them...

Paola Navone "Nuvola" collection

Ok... I may be a little late catching up with Gervasoni's Nuvola collection from Paola Navone. Not sure how I missed it, the Ghost collection being already quite a favorite (thanks to Chelsea @CHDC who introduced me to it!). I just love the chunkiness of this piece especially with the linen cover and the fact that it is not the typical fabric you would see used on this form. It's like a giant fluffy pillow in a form of a sofa! For many people linen is synonymous with a more traditional style of sofas... So there you go. Not-at-all.
L-o-v-e it.

Zoe Side Table - Pretty in White

Well... I have just finished putting together this new Zoe table (tall version) for a client and I think it's just beautiful in white. So I thought I'd share it... What do you think?

Chesterfields, Love or not?

A conversation about Chesterfield sofas a couple of nights ago has gotten me thinking further about them. Whether we love them or we don't. Really to me, it's a matter of where you see them. They can easily go from super daggy to extraordinary.
Is it my favourite sofa ever...? I'm not sure, but there is something attractive about them, the old worn leather ones that have had many years of seating and dozing on. There's a rustic appeal about them that I love but they must be seen in a completely different setting than a typical cigar room or an old mansion to display all their charms. Diamonds in the rough. They will shine in modern settings mixed with furniture from different areas and a few well place eccentric objects... Best thing is you can choose a sustainable option by buying a pre-loved one. It was a bizarre coincidence seeing some typical examples on TDF's post yesterday and I thought they may be worth a mention then...

anaca studio - New products are out!!

As promised here are the pictures for anaca studio's new products - the shoot is the result of a great collaboration between Nik Epifanidis for photography (don't forget to check his blog too: here), Sharon Orgad (Stylisti blog) and myself for the styling. These are just few of many more great shots. Real hard to pick and I still have a few up my sleeve...

I actually feel a real sense of achievement now these little guys are out and beautifully photographed. Maybe it's time I pat myself in the back...

Displayed from top to bottom are: Mr Cross tablesTall and Small with Phileas Pouf - Phileas floor cushions small and large and Elliot Coat stand - Mr Cross small table and Elliot Coat stand - and last... but one of my favourite shot, Zoe side table. (all specs here)

All products are now available to order exclusively through anaca studio or through an interior designer or architect.

Put your orders in, Christmas is getting closer!

Photoshoot: anaca studio products

As usual I can't help myself and just want to share the photoshoot from the week-end. These are just snapshots taken from my (mediocre!) phone camera for another "behind the scenes".
It was a full day of moving furniture (lucky I don't have large items yet!), styling, changing our minds, restyling, adjusting, readjusting, disagreeing then agreeing, picking up lavender (being chased by bees... well some of us!) to add greenery to the shots... We were all exhausted at the end of it but I'm absolutely thrilled and can't wait for the processed shots! Although I might agonise again on which ones are the best to pick from... Much harder to make these decisions when it is your own products.
Thank you Nik (click here for his website) for working on a week-end for me and being most patient and Sharon for your keen eye for detail and styling advice (check out her beautiful blog on Stylisti and her cute range of stationary on Nollison). You guys are the best!

Phileas Floor Cushion

A quick snap of Phileas Large Floor Cushion at "the White House"... in anticipation for the big shoot at the end of the week with Nik Epifanidis. It has been a long time coming, product development is never quick enough, so many details to iron out. This is almost the hardest part, you want your product to be out there but at the same time things have to be right. Design, proportions, detailing, manufacture... so I really can't wait! Stay tuned, a few new products are coming your way!

Phileas is for sale exclusively through anaca studio or via your interior designer.

Sneak Peek... Zoe Side Table

Need a side table to hang over your sofa? Here it is. A new addition to anaca studio's range, the Zoe side table is the perfect size to keep your cup of tea/coffee/glass of wine along with your Ipad/laptop, or even book/magazine (yes some of us still like the "real" thing...) at close range. And if you like to keep things looking minimal in the bedroom, it also makes a great bedside.
On a more commercial level, it a handy size for reception and break-out areas in offices.

Designed and made in Melbourne and sold exclusively through anaca studio, contact here for more information and keep an eye on the blog for photoshoot coming soon.

Loveseats...

Who wouldn't want a cute little love seat? Here are a few colourful ones to inspire you in case you didn't... Some call them "benches" but "Loveseat" sounds so such much nicer (maybe it's the French in me)!  This is a pretty broad selection to suit a wide variety of homes or some more commercial interiors...
Going clockwise: Archie from Jardan, Nub by Patricia Urquiola for Andreu World, Foliage also by Patricia Urquiola for Kartel (in fact at almost 2m long it is a Big loveseat I admit... but still has that Loveseat look), Iconic Swan from Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, Basket from Softline, and last but not least the Ercol Loveseat from Temperature Design.

Looking for full length mirrors?

Good mirrors are hard to find. I have already touched on the subject earlier in the year. But I thought I would be more specific on this post and looked for full length mirrors. I have one at home of course, quite simple with a solid timber frame and it is the perfect size. I bought it at Freedom years ago when I first moved to Australia so with a small budget. It has lasted me all those years though (about 10-ish) but looking a little dreary now. A nice re-polish wouldn't hurt...
But from budget to pretty fancy... here is a selection of a few special items that have caught my attention because of their point of difference, in their simplicity, their extravagance or their detailing. I personally like objects that are quite minimalist and well made, but sometimes a room needs a piece that's a little more extraordinary... From top to bottom, left to right: Belize - Ligne Roset, Psiche - Maxalto, Book - De Padova, Miroir Elisabeth - Reflect+ (thanks Yooko for the link), Bric, Kooh-I-Noor Specchi and Diva - Glas Italia
